#85 'Rose in Bloom' 6x6"

A beautiful rose, I don't know the name of, I like the full rounded head and two tone petal colours. Really difficult to paint! There is a tendency to get lost in the layers of complex petals - simplifying! But still getting the essence of it.
The photo has a bit of shine on it so I may take it again tomorrow.

Had a busy Open Studio day which we weren't expecting for a Friday. Nick, my husband is also showing his photographic work in his studio opposite mine. Here he is on my studio floor with our dog Matte getting cuddles in between visitors today.

  1. By the way, amazingly my Posh palette's wrinkles have now almost completely disappeared after my disaster with a white spirit rag left on it overnight. What is it covered with?? It's barely marked. So relieved. A busy Open Studio sounds good.

  2. Sorry, forgot to say, a beautifully painted rose, Clare. It must be easy to get lost. I haven't tried to paint a rose - too daunting - as you'll know I'm sure, Carol Marine says she sometimes paints the whole flower form in a general, mid tone and then places the darks and lights. Does that sound to you like it'd make it more manageable?

    1. Hi Caroline, for the green I mixed Lemon Yellow & Ultramarine and then some of the pink/orange mixture to warm it up, possibly a little white too.
      Hope that is helpful, Clare

  5. A beautiful rose and I now know how difficult it is to paint. I have made five attempts but have now located a more co-operative rose so look forward to the lesson. Your rose has a lovely 3D effect looking into the depth of the rose but lovely tones in the petals and good composition.
